Droning On

I bought a drone the other day.  Not a real one; I bought a tiny quadcopter by Hubsan called the X4.  It’s a lot of fun, but it has issues. I’ve wanted a drone ever since I saw the incredible work Gabriel Scanu is putting up on Instagram.  He flies his drone over the coasts of Australia and is just putting out some amazing work.  Since then, more and more drone photos have started to crop up.  More excitingly, lots…

New Non-Fiction on Parent.co

Catching Up with Anpanman I’ve written an essay all about Anpanman!  Well, all about my complete lack of understanding of Anpanman and how that ties into my anxieties as a parent. The essay is live on Parent.co as I type this.  Go there, read, and share, if you would.  Thanks!

I Want a New Watch

I picked up a Fossil Q Grant about ten months ago and finally feel like I can corral my thoughts on it. TL;DR Here’s the TL;DR version:  On the plus side, it’s a great looking watch, especially for the price.  It does a good job of tracking steps and an excellent job of telling time.  But it’s not very good at staying connected to my phone.  And every time it gets disconnected, I end up having to jump through a…

Apple, Fix Your Shit

I blew off work this morning and instead played through the most recent update to Agent A. The game is fantastic and the update plays just as well as the original and I’m excited at the idea of further chapters being released in the future. Then I played through Old Man’s Journey. And now I’m playing through Monument Valley 2. All three of these games are fantastic, easy-to-play, beautifully made, short games. That last point is key. They’re short. Which…

The Seven Song Playlist

Down the Rabbit Hole 1.  Hanging on the Telephone I caught Blondie on a recent episode of Jools Holland.  They’re still amazing and watching their performance sent me on a deep dive through their back catalog.  I ended up at one of my all time favorite albums, Parallel Lines (1978).  Disco infused power pop at its best. 2.  Seasons (Waiting on You) The same episode of Jools Holland featured the return of Future Islands.  They also put on a…

Note to Self

– The closing scene of “The Dinner Party” (Master of None, s02e05) Aziz Ansari’s Netflix show about life and everything was moving in a way I’m having a hard time articulating. Also, it reminded me a lot of this one, in all the best ways.  And also, this song. – “My Family’s Slave” by Alex Tizon in The Atlantic is heartbreaking; it’s a bit of a long read but absolutely worthy of every moment it takes. – Moments of Happiness…

Taking Pictures of Flowers is Harder Than You Thought

I used to be better at photography.  Somewhere along the line, I got lazy and started letting my cameras do the work for me.  In these posts (Outtakes) I’ll talk about some of the ways I’m re-training myself and trying to break out of the ruts I’ve gotten stuck in.   Hanami, Hanami, Hanami Again      It’s hanami (cherry blossom viewing) season again and that means it’s time for my annual attempt to take photos of the cherry blossoms…

Consider the Mango

The dessert portion of today’s school lunch was a “mango stick.”  A thin slice of almost frozen mango in plastic-wrap.  God it was good.  Hoping to shock the fourth graders I was having lunch with, I asked them to guess how old I was the first time I had mango.    “Three.”    “Eight.”    “I was twenty-four.”    Cue the shock, disbelief, and questioning of everything they had ever learned about how the world works.  (Which, to be…

TOBU World Square

You know what this photo needs? People. Maybe a young couple strolling hand in hand. Maybe some kids gawking in wonder at the illuminated brilliance around them. Maybe someone standing in silhouette, their pose a study in contemplation… So, where are they? I took this photo while writing a piece for Samurai Trip, a website for travelers in Japan, about a small amusement park in Nikko called TOBU World Square. The park is lovely. You should go if you get…
